The world is facing an unprecedented diabetes epidemic.

The prevalence of Type 1 diabetes is due to both an increase in incidence, a case of concern , and an increase in the longevity of the affected persons , a case of satisfaction . Type 1 diabetes incidence varies greatly from region to region , the greatest being Finland with an annual incidence rate averaging 40 new cases per year per 100.000 children and adolescents under the age of 15 . Recent studies in Switzerland and the United Kingdom have shown an impressive rise in young children over the last few years. The reasons for this situation are presently unknown .

Regarding Type 2 diabetes , which is frequently undiagnosed , the disease, strongly genetic in nature , is markedly favored by overweight/obesity and sedentarity. Since 1985 a marked increase in prevalence has been reported worlwide including in children and adolescents.

Available estimations and projections for the seven IDF Regions will be presented together with suggestions for attempting to control an epidemic of great concern for individuals , health care authorities and governments all over the world .

The strategy of IDF , particularly , the IDF/WHO programme « Diabetes action now » supported by the World Diabetes Foundation, will be outlined .The world is facing an unprecedented diabetes epidemic.
